A voxel reconstruction of a Shenzhen high-school bathroom, tracing the casual surveillance designed into institutional space.

This is a 3d replica of the men’s bathroom in my high school in Shenzhen, where I had my first paruresis (shy bladder syndrome) experience. Many anxiety episodes took place in this space where each bathroom-goer would be exposed to the sight of others. The atmosphere in such institutional bathrooms in China was invariably one of casual surveillance. In recreating the space with a voxel model, I begin to channel the intentions of the designers and builders of these school bathrooms. What are the motivations behind designing bathroom surveillance? My 3d models set the stage for a subsequent animation short, now in progress.
